"My eyes, observing light & shadows, shade and nature itself offer me the possibility to express my feelings and the pleasure is immense: to be able to donate, with my colours, serenity to those who observe my art." (L. Tigani)
Review 1Critic and Art historian PAOLO LEVI, expresses himself on the artist Luciano Tigani in these words:
«Luciano Tigani's painting is surely linked to his place of origin, Calabria. The artist describes its areas, colours and perfumes in beautiful country views, where they meet and express visual reality and intense emotions, all contained by little canvas, almost underlining the whispering of the inner prim. His landscapes are familiar places, lived, studies, loved, just as it can be perceived by his interpretation, which doesn't leave out any of the emotions caught by the eye. Each leaf, each pebble is stroked by light, which reveals its natural beauty suggesting its importance as a unique and precious subject. Tigani is aware of the secrets of dreams and colour; vivid tones are laid out on the pictorial space in small touches that ovelap, giving rise to light and shade contrasts, able to bring the county side continuous flow to a half for an instant. The strength is found in the balance between light and shades. The careful allocation of the marks and the precise cadence of tones confer plastic value to the viewed subject, which appears calibrated and precise, willingly anti theoretic. They are especially open spaces, places where a human figure never appears, indicating the reflective loneliness of a sunny countryside, or in front of a stormy sea, or in the shade, under a thick density of trees. Landscapes which evoke happy memories, sharable, because of the inescapable elements of an imaginary anseems to want to d visual exquisite mediterranian, our Mediterranian. Tigani seems to want to give us his precious testimony, an invitation to go back to a serene and incontaminated world where it is possible to take back nature's fresh air and harmony».Critic and Art historian GIORGIA CASSINI, expresses himself on the artist Luciano Tigani in these words:
«Luciano Tigani expresses an innovative concept in the contemporary artistic panorama without losing sight of it's figurative history or traditions. His paintings are like songs with colour as lyrics, a warm and solar light that strokes the shapes, where the accurate and precise description loses itself in a luminous perspective, but without forgetting or neglecting the overall effect of portrayal. They are great works of arts with recognisable characteristics in the determination of the defined geographic location, where the realistic component is lived up by an effective luminous touch. He makes sure to highlight the slightest variations that atmosphere and time of the day cause objects to have, he always finds the perfect equilibrium between the outer reality and his inner feelings: a beautiful balance reached by pictorial means. Colour creates the space for combinations and overlapping of images,a rhythm dictated by the harmony between colours and tones. The harmony generated by his colours is just as serene and balanced as the fresh composition pervaded to an intimate level. Works of art where it's obvious and indisputable the charm of an authentic vocation, the ability to express colour through a pure emotion. Contemplating Tigani's sights is like experiencing a journey through Italy's nature, the beautiful country of which views arouse admiration and refines the soul. It's a kind of intimate journey through which the loved reality of the artist can be perceived. Polistena vecchia, Mareggiata a Capo Vaticano, Camigliatello, Chianalea all’imbrunire, Scilla, San Giorgio Morgeto, are views that change into dreams, images of serene affection. Works of joy, places of the heart that reinvigorate the mind by giving back to the landscape its magnificence and harmony. Moreover, in Limina innevata, Fiumara con riflessi, Scorcio ligure, the sublime nature is for Tigani space and colour, reality and feeling. Tigani is a talented author or an extraordinary corpus of oils and pastels that enclose and make immortal those images that enchanted him: places full of joy and light, luxiourious vegetations, open spaces where nature imposes itself to our gaze, blowing our minds away and touching our hearts».Essayist, writer and art critic VITO CRACAS, expresses himself on the artist Luciano Tigani in these words:
«Luciano Tigani observes the surrounding landscape, the nature of its liveliness, the minute daily reality, with attentive eye and vital sensitivity, with the enthusiasm of someone who can still inebriate himself the beauties that life presents us with, feeling the growth of never-ending emotions. It's from this emotional fullness that he draws the origins of his pictorial art, that immerses itself in light and colour, in the seductive sensations, in th e inescapable movement of feelings, translating its quivers, vibrations and visual perceptions. Serene and breezy painting, full of chromatic vitality, that of Tigani is carried out through exemplary figuration which gives life to the radiance of Mediterranean places, interpreting its specific essence and mysterious charm. His images relive the crystalline atmospheres, dominates by the bright skies, sometimes crossed by puffs of white clouds. His style highlights solid and formal structures, evoking realist motives, taken from Macchiaioli and Impressionists, personal re visitation but by keeping its meaningful traces of its chromatic intonations, tones, lights and shades. Tigani's works of art are like open windows on the world, fresh compositions that reflect beauty and harmony, values which are more and more appreciated in our days».
Review 2Journalist and Art Historian Dr. Myriam Zerbi comments on Luciano Tigani's work:
«The visual experience is always that of a lived landscape: each stone is touched, every branch is measured and stroked by a glance and hands, each flower enjoyed by its power to inebriate the eye and smell, each rough surface of a rock, the mousse formed by waves or the movement of the clouds is an old perception and is relived, always the same but new, from generation to generation. In Luciano Tigani contemplation for those dear places and the necessity to paint them coincide with the exact passionate force. Nature for the painter from Polistena, is never a show, but a living space; from his paintings emerges an inside view of Calabria, through visual emotions that link together the observed place and the feelings that perceive it. Where everything is moving, time goes by, and a moment has already passed, the last horizon is the inner one. Here there's a balanced coming together of the short-lived states of nature and the instantaneousness of a motive that has impressed the eye with a memory which gives a new body and shape to the felt impression. In order to originate an appearance behind the other where there's a diffusion of light and dark juxtaposed areas. The painter, has to capture that moment in the landscape on front of him, an escaping reality, where appearances are constantly changing, and even sensations are temporary and there's the risk of them possibly being also very brief; in order to paint there's the necessity to stare, into the imaginary space of the painting, that which is eluded. By being a painter, Tigani is able to be inside the landscape and then, distant from the motive now being a simple imagination, tell through colours what is felt at a first glance, brushing against and grabbing flashes of what is the uncatchable essence of nature. Towns ans places of Calabria, Polistena, Anoia, San Giorgio, the marina of Palmi, the rich and juicy vineyards, the old olive trees which, the sunny vastness of the landscape, hen houses, sanctuaries, tacit walls which expose ancient bricks to the sun, the explosion of a wall of hydrangeas, the bitter and irresistible taste of a citrus fruit, the quietness of a pergola, climbing plants or a cascade of wisteria, all that appears is light which needs to be transformed into a tint, and a pigment that needs to be broken down in brush strokes, in order to give a concrete shape to perception, and Tigani does it through colours which emerge from the canvas, and is spreads through shades, forming the painting that is given life to through emotional representations. I begin with black and purple, I then go lighter and spread the colours: under the skin of the colours that slowly emerge and stratify themselves by giving plasticity to the compositions, under which beats a sort of melancholy, eradicated from those times when the memory of the calabrese landscape is lost, which is reflected in the interior landscape of the painter. Tigani unconditionally loves his land, and is constantly searching for the appropriate expression in order to capture its mystery and relive it through the space of his paintings. An instinctive lyricism, son of a primitive nature and of a humanity full of strong passions that is able to sing the splendour of a blossom that will bring fruits such as the dark cape of destiny, giving life to that pain that becomes sweeter, it comes through through his paintings and it filtrates through green and blue, lively and full of creative stupor in the creation of colour».Master SILVIO LOFFREDO, painter and internationally famous sculptor, expresses himself in these words about the artist Luciano Tigani:
«Considering the recently viewed works of the artist, there is to say that his reality is projected upon the viewer: in these paintings we can feel a serene optimism towards existence. His paintings consist of tree-lined streets for example and so on, comforting views portrayed in the most accurate detail, that his eyes are able to catch in a calming climate whilst avoiding flat reproductions; the quest for colour gives strength to his paintings, views, making it possible for the viewer to see exactly what he sees. He does this without neglecting any detail, masking anything that is not beautiful and allowing to see things from his enchanted point of view».
Love for art has stolen my soul. I love to express through my paintings: places, colors and smells that belong to my mother land: Calabria. It is a great pleasure to express onto a white canvas, vivid tonalities through light and shades. My aim is to transmit great emotions. It if I could discover the colors of happiness... I would paint the whole world.
Painting is a long fatigue of imitations of what one loves. (Renato Guttuso)An artist must love life and show us how beautiful it is. Without him we would not be so sure about it. (Anatole France)
Luciano Tigani was born in Polistena in 1966 where he still lives and works. The artistic inspiration has been growing in him since he was a child and is still continuing to grow as the years go by, it's by observing the colorful nature of his most cherished land, Calabria, that he decides to project his feelings onto a white canvas.
Without thinking about finances , he begins by discovering the Indian ink technique and the pastel one creating paintings of great imagination and abstractness, he then moves onto water colors, therefore moving closer to classical to classical painting. He begins studying the landscape, perspective; he discovers the beauty of the nature surrounding him and he perfections this with oil and blotting technique.
Although he is a self-taught artist, the result is never the less astonishing and his participation at various events has shown the agreement of the public. Tigani begins to dedicate himself intensely to art, by finding people to collaborate in Italy and abroad, receiving positive criticism from art historians amongst whom: Paolo Levi, Giorgia Cassini, Vito Cracas, Miriam Zerbi.
Many papers have published comments on his work, amongst which: La Stampa, Il piccolo di Alessandria, La Riviera, La Gazzetta del Sud, Calabria Letteraria, Calabria Sconosciuta, Il Quotidiano di Calabria, America Oggi. And also some more art-orientated magazines: Arte, Italia Arte, Arte Contemporanea nelle Dimore Storiche Italiane, Arte moderna and finally also in Paolo Levi's book (Giorgio Mondadori publications) "Creazioni".
Luciano is aware that his primary goal is to be able to transmit to others the same emotions that he gets from the surrounding nature; by leaving a mark that doesn't disappear in time, therefore continuing to brushstroke his canvases with great gentleness and passion.
My thoughts on art
I started to get an interest in art at the age of 15, almost as a game. I believe that the love for art is not only of my life today, but it has stolen my heartand soul, I love being able to transmit emotions to those who observe my paintings, I love being able to express my feelings and what I see with colours.
Many times people ask me how I have been able to master this art without a teacher, my answer never changes.I think that the main factor is the sensitivity and love I have for nature; in my case, when I observe the beauties of a landscape, a sea view, a stream, a field, I get transported into a magic world and the image is already in my head, all I have to do is copy it onto a white canvas. Probably you will be asking yourself: but what about the colours? The difficulty of light and shades?
If you carefully try to observe those details that people usually fail to notice, you will see how you will be able to feel the beauty of the shapes and the necessary shades. Art is an ensemble of beautiful things, if you really love it it will come naturally and you will never go back again, it will in fact be art itself to repay you by giving you wonderful results.
Of course in the life of an artist too there are several moments of mental confusion and great difficulties, art challenges you and you often feel tempted to give up, you feel as though you have never touched a brush, and it's when this happens that you realise that painting is not a game; you don't only use your hands, but your heart, soul and mind. This is what pushes you to create a work of art, and often you don't have that tranquillity that's very much needed confront a canvas, painting is not a mechanical sort of gesture; there's the need of magic moments, moments of great and inner peace in order to give it your best, and to be able to continue with that painting that for an artist is comparable to a child made out of colours and love.
